Amorphous, undulating shapes seem to drift across the wavy surface of this small lacquered tray, which displays the artist’s mastery of fine and exceptionally detailed wood carving and lacquer work. Created from repeated applications of lacquer, the white and black designs flow into each other and create a sense of movement. Evoking themes of interconnectedness, Matsuzaki’s delicately sculpted piece could be used to serve small treats or candies during intimate gatherings.
