Kai Tujimura’s Hikidashi Kuro Chawan is a traditional form of a tea bowl. Thrown on the wheel, the artist opened the lip widely, allowing the form to have a sense of openness, of flow. The white stoneware material of the clay is then coated with a thick layer of an opaque matt glaze. There are areas of the form where the thickness of the glaze application is evident. These slight anomalies in the form’s surface treatment are due to the evidence of the artist’s hand.
