Matsubara’s scenery harkens back to the works of Suiboku paintings from Japan’s Muromachi period. The broad, dripping strokes nearly cross into realm of calligraphy, yet rather than ink, Matsubara has brought the very earth to the canvas. From within the confines of four edges emerges a sheer cliffside of dark earth.
