Working in shades of deep blue, Matsubara’s painting has an almost three dimensional quality as if the forms were carved rather than painted. Solid blue plains of space with irregular, coastal-like borders are interrupted by striking lines, circles and curves that seem like cartographic markings. The title, Tamayura, or “fleeting moment,” has connotations of an echo or an afterimage, as if Matsubara’s painting was a palimpsest of an ancient map or drawing.
