Alerted to the power of a ringing prayer, and marveling at the circle as a means of expressing sound, Ken Matasubara’s ‘cosmic sound’ motif was born during his residing alongside his brother Imajo Temple in Fukui prefecture. Matsubara returned to his hometown in Toyama more than a decade later. For a month, he embraced the wilderness on the remote island of Bamba, drawing upon the scenery of the environment. Under the stars, Matsubara reflected on time and matters of the universe with an esoteric Buddhist mind. Seeing all as part of one great whole lies at the center of Matsubara’s abstract paintings.
