To increase the scale of blown glass is a challenge that demands exponentially greater resources to accommodate the weight, density, and other physical properties of glass. De Santillana’s ‘crystal’ is an early example of the larger and more experimental format which emphasizes the cold-worked surface so characteristic of her work. Relying only on crystal to preserve the transparency, the incredible density of form reads as a permeable silk texture.
