The conical body, distinct foot, and simple glaze of this piece are indicative of Ido-style tea bowls, a utensil commonly reserved for formal tea gatherings. The rough sand of the clay peeks through the smooth glaze to create a complex texture that facilitates a sturdy grip in the user’s hand. When the piece was fired, glazed pooled around the foot of the bowl, creating a unique crackling pattern.
